Excerpt:

... as a spectator you walk through the work of art and become part of it ... it never occurred to me so strongly as here. In the General’s smile you feel as if you are there at the dinner party, just minding your own business and doing your own thing and, like the actors at the table, invisible to the general who is half blind anyway. But more even in Dawn Mist, Separation Faith we are pulled deeply into the scenes. We have no choice; we become part of this story.

If you want to see the whole work of art, you just have to walk through it and by doing that you become part of it. This is a kind of aesthetic where the distance between spectator and artwork becomes very narrow, to a degree of almost non-existing. Yang Fudong leaves us no choice but to become part of his aesthetic world and that world is so beautiful that it cannot but touch you in the deepest of your emotions. This is a rarely seen deeply rooted beauty Yang Fudong offers us.
